Salmon Fishing
There is superb salmon fishing to be found in many parts of Scotland. In recent years, many rivers have seen improved runs of salmon, due to pollution control, improved river management and the increased willingness of anglers to return fish to lowly-stocked rivers. Scotland has some great salmon fishing rivers, making the selection of a fishing venue difficult. In the shape of the Rivers Dee, Spey and Tay, Central Scotland possesses some world famous salmon fishing rivers. However, some less well-known names in the region also provide rewarding fishing for salmon. Such venues include, in the east, the Rivers Deveron, Earn, Findhorn and Teith, whilst more westerly locations are the picturesque Loch Lomond, along with the Rivers Awe and Orchy. Southern Scotland also possesses its fair share of fruitful salmon rivers, most notably the River Tweed, whilst others worthy of note are the Rivers Annan and Nith in the south, along with the Doon and Stinchar in the west. In northern ! Scotland, the flow of some large rivers such as the Beauly and Conon is regulated by hydroelectric systems making it less dependent on rainfall. However, the majority of Scotland`s northern spate rivers depend on rainfall in the summer months to bring salmon from the sea. Given the right conditions, rivers such as the Dionard, Halladale, Helmsdale, Laxford, Naver and Thurso can provide some of the best salmon fishing anywhere in the world.

Trout Fishing
Although often considered the "poor relation" to the salmon, the brown trout provides great fly fishing opportunities in many areas of Scotland, with the advantages of wider accessibility and lower cost. Successful trout angling in Scotland does not depend on the sometimes unpredictable river levels and trout may be caught in both lochs and rivers when conditions may well prove the undoing of the best salmon angler. To the north of the Great Glen, the counties of Caithness, Ross & Cromarty and Sutherland offer superb fishing for wild trout in a vast number of lochs. The mainland of Central Scotland offers great diversity to the trout angler, with classic loch fishing on the renowned Loch Leven, Lochs Katrine, Lubnaig and Venachar in the scenic Trossachs, along with excellent river fishing on the Rivers Don, Spey, Tay and Tummel. Southern Scotland also has some great river and loch trout fishing, including the celebrated trout of the Rivers Clyde and Tweed, the Solway rivers ! of Annan, Esk and Nith, accompanied by the upland lochs of the Lammermuir Hills, Pentlands and Renfrew Heights.

Coarse Fishing
With marvellous fishing for salmon and trout available throughout Scotland, coarse fishing is often overlooked. Visiting anglers should be aware of the large range of coarse fishing opportunities on offer, with perch and pike widely distributed. Along with predatory species, fishing for many other coarse fish is available, including chub on the River Annan, barbel of the lower Clyde and bream throughout Central Scotland. The Rivers Clyde and Forth are well stocked with dace, whilst tench are abundant in Dumfries & Galloway, with widespread fishing opportunities for eels, gudgeon and rudd.
