The reserve comprises a range of mountains, with connecting ridges, cliffs and lochans, built of ancient rocks, folded and faulted in picturesque contortions, and home to the most celebrated collection of mountain plants in Britain. These surviving outliers of the arctic and alpine floras are relict and isolated, and require sensitive protection and management.
In the National Trust for Scotland's care are 3,374 ha (8,339 a) of the southern slopes of the Lawers range and 1,348 ha (3,331 a) of the Tarmachan range, noted for a rich variety of mountain plants. Birds include raven, ring-ouzel, red grouse, ptarmigan, dipper and curlew.
