St Andrews Castle

An Episcopal Residence

St Andrews Castle was the official residence of Scotland’s leading bishop (and later archbishop) throughout the Middle Ages. Its scale demonstrated the power and wealth of the bishops, and it was the setting for many important events which determined the course of Scottish history. Some of the key moments leading up to the Scottish Reformation in 1560 were played out within its precinct. These include the burning of George Wishart, the Protestant preacher, the murder of Cardinal Beaton, and the great siege of 1546–7, when Rev John Knox was one of the garrison.

Aberdour Castle And Garden

Aberdour Castle is among the oldest standing masonry castles in Scotland; in fact, it may be the oldest. Hidden away in the extensive complex are the remains of a two-storey hall-house. Its cubed ashlar masonry walls are remarkably similar to those in the nearby parish church of St Fillan’s, dated to the mid 12th century. And the double-light lancet window-head is identical to those in Inchcolm Abbey offshore, dated to around 1200. The splayed base course and clasping angle-buttresses at the corners are further evidence of Norman mason work. It is possible that all three buildings were built by the same stonemasons.
Established in April 1996, M&D’s Scotland’s Theme Park, has grown into one of the busiest day attractions in Scotland.
