Description

Scotland's most famous explorer and missionary was born here in 1813, in a single-roomed house in Shuttle Row - today a Grade A listed tenement.

It is now part of the museum that tells the story of Livingstone's explorations in Africa and is home to a wide range of his personal belongings and travel aids.
Find out how he grew from a lowly factory boy to become an African explorer and a hero of the Victorian age.

The museum also gives a fascinating insight into the harsh conditions endured by industrial workers in the 19th century.

Described by the Practical Motorhome Summer Special 2012 Magazine as

Escape to an island retreat. We marvelled at a silence that was broken only by bird song and the roar of the waves. If you are seeking a simple little piece of paradise….this has to be a most worthy contender. This one wins hands down for the things that money can’t buy; peace, beauty, tranquillity, views that almost moved us tears right from our lounge window, friendly locals and as much sparkling fresh, sea air as you can take. Each night we slept like logs and woke up completely refreshed having partaken in the simple pleasures offered on this most laid back of islands. We left the island refreshed, promising ourselves that this would not be our last visit to this piece of Scottish Paradise”
